There is no homework for this week !  There is NO Friday School on May 5th because the Police use the building!

Mrs. Jackson, my substitute,  will be meeting you for class on May 12th!

We have talked and thought about CHARACTERS all year long.  CHARACTERS have traits - these are qualities or attributes. Traits tell us what a character is like.

Draw a line between each character and his/her traits:

Charcters                                                                                  Trait WORDS

Dickon                                        reckless, rash, impulsive

Mary                                           magical, magnetic

Ratty                                           shy, introverted, kind

Toad                                            contrary, direct, curious

Badger                                  sociable, brave, accommodating

On Friday, I will bring a WORD for each of you. The WORD will be a WORD of encouragement and character that I think honors the traits YOU bring to our class and our gathering.

Would you please bring a WORD or two for me, about our relationship as teacher and student or about the class?

What is the Terror of the Wild Wood?

Write in your own words what you think the terror in the wild woods is.  Why was Mole afraid? Why did Ratty carry a brace of pistols and a cudgel?

We have started reading The Wind in the Willows.  The illustration above is by Inga Moore - the very talented illustrator of the book we are reading.

Below is an illustration from The Wind in the Willows but it is by a different illustrator.  It is by a very famous illustrator of children's books, Arthur Rackham.  Write a sentence or two about what is happening and who is in the picture below:

By the way, below is another illustration by Inga Moore, can you guess which book THIS illusration  is from?

Look at these amazing and creative students and their Secret Garden Animals!

LaSalle will send us a picture of his painted when he gets it done!

Hope you had a FANTASTIC spring break!  I did!

Draw us a picture of something fun you did this week!
If you are in several classes you only have to do this ONCE to get credit for all!

How do you expect time in the Secret Garden will affect Colin?

You all did a great job with your drawings!

In our story, Colin has a disability or at least thinks he does. How do his attitudes about his condition affect who he is and what he can do?

Now watch these two videos about Bethany Hamilton. You might know Bethany's story - she lost her arm in a shark attack at 13. The first video briefly tells the story, the second tells the reason for her courage and great attitude. What do you think?

January 6th - first class of 2017

No homework this week!  I look forward to seeing you on Friday!

Print this page and save it for your special garden surprise!  You will need it next week!
Rooting and care: Set your container or vase in a cool (50-60°F is ideal) place away from direct sunlight. Check the bulbs frequently and water thoroughly when they potting mix is dry 1 inch below the surface (but not more than once a week until the bulbs begin active growth), or when the water level is more than an inch below the stones or glass in your vase. If your bulbs are in a bowl (a pot without a drainage hole), water with extra care: Bulbs sitting in soggy potting mix soon rot. Once a week, tug gently on the bulbs to see if they have begun to product roots. When your tug meets with firm resistance (usually about 3 weeks after potting), move the container to a sunny window. Keep a close eye on watering. Bulbs in active growth can dry out in just a day or two.
When Paperwhites are forced to bloom indoors, they have a tendency to topple when in flower. Hold them upright with the bulb supports supplied with our bulb kits or with bamboo stakes and twine (available at garden centers). If you use our supports, set them in place when the bulb shoots are 8-10 inches tall by inserting the legs at regular intervals along the inside edge of the container. As the leaves and stems grow, a few will find their way outside the ring. Gently bend them and push them back inside.
After Paperwhites finish blooming, we recommend that you throw the bulbs out or toss them on the compost pile. They won't bloom again indoors.

To Think About:

Look at this little guy that visited my yard today!

What would Dicken do if he were here?
What would YOU do?

This is a Grey Fox.  He looks a bit like a coyote, but is smaller, has a black stripe down his very long and bushy tail, and has orange on his neck, underside, and legs.  He is lovely, is he not?

Homework for a Holiday Prize!!

I missed you all last week!  Can't wait to see you again on December 2nd!

Click on the picture below & print and complete the Thanksgiving Sheet for a prize when we meet again on December 2nd.
This is the same for Language Arts, Science and History so you only need to complete it once!

NOTE:

There is no class on November 18th because the San Antonio Police are using our building for a meeting.  There is also no class on the 25th for Thanksgiving Holiday.

Think About It!

What do you think it would be like to meet Dickon?  What would you most like ask him if you did meet him?

When Mary got into the secret garden she began clearing away the old leaves and weeds.  Underneath she finds tiny green shoots like these.

In England, in the early spring, daffodils and crocus would be coming up.  Can you find a picture of a daffodil or a crocus in bloom?

Creator's Playground: Grafolio:

There are lots of secrets in the novel The Secret Garden.  Write down at least 3 secrets or mysteries or things we don't understand at this point in the story.
